Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to attend the annual “Barbequeer” at Mississippi State University (MSU). Holmes Cultural Diversity Center, MSU Spectrum and the MSU LGBTQ+ Union sponsored the event.
The annual barbeque is held during MSU’s Dawg Days, which welcomes students back to campus for a new school year. This was the second time HRC Mississippi’s joined the annual event.
During the event, I had the privilege of visiting with several student leaders who are very engaged in advocating for LGBTQ students on campus.
HRC Mississippi works closely with LGBTQ students on our college campuses across the state. We provide consultation and resources for students advocates who want to work with their university administrators in creating and changing policies to ensure their university is a safe and welcoming place for all incoming LGBTQ students.
As an alumnus of MSU, I was encouraged by the fact that there are many more students LGBTQ and allies that are stepping up to be leaders. The future for LGBTQ students at Mississippi State is very bright.

As young people push to attain the goals of the queer community on their campuses, HRC is working to provide tools, facilitate connections with other LGBTQ student activists across the country and empower youth to fight for LGBTQ equality on campus and beyond. Learn more here.
