Ellen Page, Laverne Cox, Tituss Burgess, Lily Tomlin and Evan Rachel Wood were just a few of the LGBTQ nominees announced this morning for the 69th annual Emmy Awards.
Tomlin, who is openly a lesbian, was nominated alongside her co-star Jane Fonda for their show Grace and Frankie, which follows the journey of two women whose husbands suddenly come out and subsequently leave them for each other. Both are longtime HRC supporters.
Burgess, who is openly gay, was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. HRC presented Burgess with the HRC Visibility Award in 2015.
This was Wood’s first Emmy nomination. In February of this year, HRC honored Wood with the HRC Visibility Award at the North Carolina Gala where she delivered a moving acceptance speech about the importance of bisexual visibility.
Transgender icon and advocate Cox was nominated for her role on Orange is the New Black. Samira Wiley, Cox’s former costar, is also nominated for her role in The Handmaid’s Tale. HRC honored Wiley with the HRC Visibility Award in 2015.
Gaycation, the hit show starring HRC supporter Ellen Page and her friend Ian Daniel, was nominated for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program. Page came out in 2014 at HRC’s first annual Time to THRIVE conference.
Additionally, major LGBTQ-themed show received multiple nominations, including seven nominations apiece for RuPaul’s Drag Race and for the hit Amazon show Transparent, which follows the transition and story of a transgender parent and her family. Cast members Jeffrey Tambor, Judith Light, and Kathryn Hahn were all nominated as well. Light has been an HRC supporter for many years and Hahn received HRC’s Ally for Equality Award at the HRC Atlanta Gala last year.
Two allies and HRC supporters, Allison Janney and Ty Burrell, were nominated. Burrell’s hit show Modern Family was also nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series.
HRC is so proud to call so many of these nominees longtime HRC supporters and leaders in the fight for LGBTQ equality. The award show will air live on CBS on Sunday, September 17.
