Episcopal Church USA Rejects Divisive Proposal Banning Gay Bishops

Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese made the
following statement as the Episcopal Church USA rejected a
proposal that would have banned openly gay priests from being
consecrated as bishops:

"The Church is keeping a welcome mat before its front door," said Human
Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese. "Many gay, lesbian, bisexual
and transgender Americans were taught that they, just like everybody
else, were God's children. It's important that incredible leaders like
Bishop Gene Robinson be allowed to continue their work in their faith
communities, not in spite of who they are but because their own history
has taught them so much about what it means to be understanding toward
their brothers and sisters."
