The House of Bishops of the Episcopal Church USA voted Tuesday to reaffirm the US church's moratorium on confirming new openly gay or lesbian bishops and blessing of same sex unions. The decision came days before a deadline imposed by leaders of the global Anglican Church that relations would be "damaged at best" if the Episcopal Church USA did not cease consecrating openly gay bishops and blessing same-sex unions.
Speaking for the Human Rights Campaign, Harry Knox, director of the HRC Religion and Faith Program offered the following reaction to the Episcopal Church's decision:
"This decision is a profound disappointment to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people everywhere," said Harry Knox, director of the HRC Religion and Faith Program. "The bishops are in danger of succumbing to the temptation to bow before an idol called church unity when God demands justice."
"We stand solidly behind the efforts of Integrity to overturn the moratorium at General Convention 2009 and pledge ourselves to redouble our supportive efforts. We will not go away; we will not be silent. Our faith and our lives depend on it."
