This past week, the Gulf region suffered from two different oil spills, reminding the region of the constant threat communities face. The first spill from a Hilcorp Energy pipeline spilled approximately 4,200 gallons of crude near Lake Grande Ecaille, a part of Barataria Bay on July 26th. The second, occurring yesterday, spilled 840 gallons of oil from a line owned by Texas Petroleum Management. The spill dumped the oil into the marsh at Southwest Pass, a shipping channel that leads into the Mississippi River.
In response, Sierra Club Director of the Beyond Dirty Fuels campaign Lena Moffitt released the following statement:
“From oil spills, to polluted air and water, the Gulf and its communities are under constant threat from the oil and gas industry.
“There is no such thing as a minor oil spill, and it’s time that we end our treatment of the Gulf as a sacrifice zone, and ensure that the region has access to the clean air and clean water that it deserves.”
