The Human Rights Campaign praised the Democratic National
Committee today for approving a resolution urging that same-sex couples and
their families receive the same Social Security benefits available to other
families. The move is the first time a major political party has included
same-sex couples in their plans for Social Security benefits, says HRC.
"The Human Rights Campaign has been working for some time to bring
parity to the Social Security system, " said HRC Political Director Winnie
Stachelberg. "We are pleased that the DNC understood the challenges that
our families face and we are grateful that they addressed this key issue."
The full DNC passed the resolution at its Winter Meeting held January 17-19
in Washington.
"The DNC made history this week by calling for full equality for
same-sex couples and their families in our nation's Social Security system,"
said DNC Chairman Terry McAuliffe in a press release. "Gay and lesbian
Americans and their families know that this party will fight for them."
Social Security benefits for same-sex couples has broad public
support, according to a November 2001 Kaiser Family Foundation poll. In the
poll, nearly 7 out of 10 Americans support Social Security benefits for
these couples and their families.
