The following is a statement from Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese on the September 22nd decision in Schroer v. Billington, in which a federal district court concluded that Library of Congress officials violated federal sex discrimination law when they withdrew a job offer from a transgender woman because she was transitioning:
"Diane Schroer served her country for twenty-five years in the U.S. Army with bravery and distinction, but despite her expertise and experience, the Library of Congress decided she couldn't continue that service in civilian life simply because she is a transgender woman. On behalf of the Human Rights Campaign, I thank Colonel Schroer for continuing to serve her country by fighting for the core principles that Americans hold dear, including that people should be judged on the merits, rather than by characteristics unrelated to their ability to do a job. Today's decision is a victory for transgender people, but there is much more to be done to create an America where no one is denied a job simply because of who they are. I congratulate and thank Diane and her excellent attorneys at the American Civil Liberties Union for all their hard work in this case."
