The Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International announced that they each have received four-star ratings (the highest possible) from Charity Navigator for their work in the past year. Charity Navigator is one of the nation’s leading charity evaluators.
In a letter to HSUS President and CEO Wayne Pacelle, Charity Navigator chief Ken Berger wrote that the rating indicates “that The Humane Society of the United States outperforms most other charities in America. This ‘exceptional’ designation from Charity Navigator differentiates The Humane Society of the United States from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust.”
The rating comes after The HSUS was rated as having the highest impact of any animal protection organization by its peers in 2011 by Philanthropedia, in which 170 experts on animal welfare and protection were asked to rank the top organizations in the field. HSUS also has high marks from the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance, meeting all 20 performance standards. Previously, Worth Magazine rated HSUS as one of the nation’s top 10 most fiscally responsible charities. The organization is consistently included in the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s annual Philanthropy 400 list of largest nonprofit groups in the country.
“We are thrilled to be recognized by Charity Navigator and so many other charity watchdog organizations for superlative management and performance,” said Pacelle. “We have the dual responsibility of working efficiently on behalf of our donors and having a big-time impact on the state of animals in this country and abroad, and we are pleased to be recognized for hitting our marks on both counts.”
The HSUS was formed in 1954 to prevent cruelty to all animals in all its forms. In 60 years of operations, we have worked to rescue animals in crisis, prevent cruelty by tackling large-scale forms of cruelty and exploitation, and drive the national discussion on animal issues to achieve transformational change. The HSUS provided hands-on care for more than 76,000 animals and ran about 20 emergency shelters in 2011.
The HSUS and HSI have a professional staff of more than 700 people who work from the organization’s base of operations in the Washington area, in more than 40 states, 30 countries, and at six animal care centers in California, Florida, Massachusetts, Oregon and Texas. The organization also runs campaigns relating to animal fighting, inhumane factory farming practices, large-scale puppy mills, the wildlife trade, fur, animal testing, exotic animals as pets, horse slaughter and other forms of cruelty.
