Latest IEA Evidence Makes Global Transition to Clean Energy Economy Clear

The International Energy Agency (IEA) released an analysis that showed global coal demand growth will continue to stall through 2021, as accelerating clean energy growth and greater energy savings are set to reduce the share of coal in the global power generation mix.

In response, Mary Anne Hitt, Director of Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal campaign, released the following statement:

“The latest data is crystal clear – in the US and around the world, renewable energy growth will keep accelerating as we move away from coal and increasingly power our homes and businesses with clean energy. Our national transition to clean energy is well underway, and the latest numbers are a sure sign that this progress isn’t slowing down —  no matter who is in the White House.

“Utilities, states, and communities are increasingly choosing affordable and accessible clean energy over polluting and expensive coal power, which is why nearly half of US coal plants are slated for retirement and renewable energy is skyrocketing.  For decision makers, the only responsible path forward is to engage and invest in this transition, ensuring that America continues to lead the way in clean energy innovation and the jobs and opportunities that come with it.”
