Marriage Equality in Washington, D.C.

A new law permitting same-sex couples to wed in the District of Columbia took effect on March 3, 2010, with the first marriage ceremonies – including three at the Human Rights Campagn headquarters – taking place on March 9. Opponents of marriage equality continue to pursue a ballot initiative defining marriage between a man and a woman – and in the wake of several legal defeats have appealed to the D.C. high court.  The Court of Appeals began hearing oral arguments on May 4 on whether the initiative can go forward.
