Medical Associations Join Together to Oppose Anti-LGBTQ Legislation #LGBTQHealth

The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), HIV Medical Association (HIVMA) and the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society (PIDS) joined together to publicly denounce laws and policies that harm members of the LGBTQ community and also impede efforts to bring about an end to the HIV and AIDS epidemic.

“Such laws and policies harm individual and public health and impede the response to the HIV and STD epidemics,” the three public health organizations explained. “We affirm the rights of all individuals, regardless of their gender orientation or sexual identity, to access quality competent health care services free from stigma and discrimination. We emphasize that all health care providers have an ethical and professional obligation to provide all patients with humane and competent medical care and treatment.”

Over the past year, HRC worked with partners across the nation to fight back against more than 200 anti-LGBTQ bills that were introduced in 34 states. While five of those bills, including North Carolina’s discriminatory HB2, became law this year, HRC expects to see a spate of similar bills introduced in 2017.

HRC applauds the IDSA, HIVMA, and PIDS for their leadership in speaking out against these dangerous and mean-spirited laws and policies.
