NAACP Act-So Launches Two New Categories

On January 14th, The National Association for the Advancement of Colored
People (NAACP) announced that its ACT-SO
(Academic, Cultural, Technical and Scientific Olympics)
program has launched two new categories for competitions
both locally and nationally. ACT-SO's local competition will
run from February to April, and its national competition will
take place in July at the NAACP's annual convention in
Houston.

The new categories, fashion design and digital arts, fall under
ACT-SO 's visual arts division. In partnership with ACT-SO,
the Maryland Institute and College of Art (MICA) will accept
at least one ACT-SO student into its Pre-College Studio
Residency Program, a summer program for students in the
visual arts. This offer will be extended to all NAACP branches
hosting ACT-SO programs.

"ACT-SO's partnership with MICA is instrumental to the
growth and expansion of the National ACT-SO Program. It will
help encourage more minority interest in the arts, prepare our
youth for college majors in the visual arts, and ultimately, for
successful careers in that field," said ACT-SO Director,
Jeneen Robinson.

ACT-SO's digital arts category will allow students to
integrate visual artistry with new media and technology and
will attract students interested in graphic design, web
design, and environmental design. The fashion design
category was added to the ACT-SO competition in response
to large student interest and will help to inspire young people
who wish to follow in the footsteps of designers such as
Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren and Sean "P. Diddy" Combs,
Robinson said.

ACT-SO is an enrichment program designed to recruit,
improve and encourage high academic and cultural
achievement among high school students. It is a major
NAACP youth initiative competition that provides a forum
through which contestants demonstrate academic, artistic,
technological and scientific prowess and expertise while
offering rewards to the competitors who exemplify scholastic
and artistic excellence.
