NAACP Calls On United States Senate To Confirm Tom Perez To Position Of Assistant AG For Civil Rights As Soon As Possible

On September 11th, The NAACP announced unwavering support for Tom Perez for Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights. In a letter to the United States Senate, the NAACP urged the Senate to confirm Perez expeditiously.

"The NAACP strongly urges the United States Senate to confirm Tom Perez for Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights. His breadth and depth of experience on the local, state and federal level make him the best candidate to work with Attorney General Eric Holder to rebuild the Civil Rights Division of the US Department of Justice," stated Hilary O. Shelton, Senior Vice President for Advocacy and Director of the NAACP's DC Bureau.

Tom Perez spent his first ten years in practice at the Civil Rights Division, where he began as a federal prosecutor in the Criminal Section, and rose to become its Deputy Chief. He then served as Special Counsel to the late Senator Edward Kennedy on the judiciary committee, serving as the Senator's principal adviser on civil rights, criminal justice, and constitutional issues. In January 1998, Mr. Perez became Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the Department of Justice. He was then appointed Director of the Office for Civil Rights at the Department of Health and Human Services.

"Our nation and especially our more vulnerable communities including our racial and ethnic minority citizens need a civil rights division of the justice department that is truly egalitarian in defending our rights. A thorough review of Tom Perez's record clearly demonstrates his long standing commitment and well honed skills in the area of defending and advancing the protection of civil rights for all Americans. It is because of his stellar background and management skills as well as his clear commitment to the mission and goals of the Civil Rights Division that Tom Perez's confirmation to serve as the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights is needed now," added Shelton.
