NAACP Chairman's Statement On Michigan And Florida Delegates

The Honorable Howard Dean
Chairman
Democratic National Committee
430 South Capitol Street, SE
Washington, DC 20003

Dear Chairman Dean:
This is a follow-up to my February 8th letter to you, asking you and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to find a solution to the disenfranchisement of Democratic voters in Michigan and Florida.
Because that letter has been widely and deliberately misinterpreted, I want to make it clear that I did not propose that the Florida or Michigan delegates be seated.

Delegates chosen in those states' primaries should not be seated at the party's Denver convention. Neither my previous letter nor this one directly or indirectly supports that course of action.
Instead, I am again asking that you and the DNC use your good offices to ensure Democrats in those states are equitably represented at the convention.

The NAACP is studiously nonpartisan. We have no favorites between or within political parties. But, we have long fought to guarantee that all Americans have an equal opportunity to cast their votes and to see them honestly counted.

That is our sole concern with respect to the Michigan and Florida situation. This concern makes it clear that some kind of redo is in order involving the two states' delegate selections.

Sincerely,
Julian Bond, Chairman
NAACP National Board of Directors
