NAACP Challenges Convention Goers to Walk Their Way to Health

At the NAACP 97th Annual Convention, Pfizer Inc and the NAACP renewed their commitment to empowering African Americans to take charge of their health. The NAACP launched its Freedom Fighter Fitness Challenge to motivate members to take charge of their health and over 2,000 BePowerful/NAACP pedometers were distributed to attendees to encourage them to track their steps as they explored the convention.

Over the past several years doctors and health professionals have encouraged Americans to look for opportunities within their daily lives to improve their overall health. Such examples include encouraging people to walk 10,000 steps a day, to maintain a healthier diet and to participate in physical activities. The distribution of the pedometers in conjunction with the education provided at the conference will increase awareness of the benefit that small changes can have on overall health.

"The partnership between the NAACP and Pfizer is evidence of the commitment that both organizations have placed on promoting healthy lifestyles within the African American community," said Myisha Patterson, NAACP National Health Coordinator. "The distribution of the co-branded pedometers and the introduction of the NAACP Freedom Fighter Fitness Challenge are further examples of how seriously the NAACP regards the health and wellness of our members."

Pfizer and the NAACP have been working as partners for the past three years to improve the health and wellness of African Americans through raising awareness, providing information, and promoting health advocacy. Pfizer recently launched the BePowerful campaign to reach African-Americans and their health care providers with information on the importance of prevention and wellness. BePowerful offers health information for families and shares health messages through community outreach programs and a media campaign that highlights taking action to improve health. In addition, the campaign includes a website, www.bepowerful.com, as a resource for health issues.

"Pfizer created the BePowerful campaign because there is a critical need to empower African Americans to proactively deal with their health and to utilize available resources," said Janice Cruz Rowe, multicultural marketing team leader for Pfizer U.S. "In partnership with the NAACP, we are working to end health disparities one step at a time." Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization. Its members throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities, conducting voter mobilization and monitoring equal opportunity in the public and private sectors.
