NAACP, Wells Fargo and Partner Groups Expand Financial Freedom Center Support Across 21 Cities

The NAACP, in conjunction with Wells Fargo and several partner organizations, announces the launch of the Financial Freedom Center Satellite program.  The program expands financial education, financial services, and banking resources to historically disadvantaged communities.  

“This is an important step toward educating underserved communities about money management, financial services, and home ownership,” stated NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous.  “The NAACP is proud to stand with Wells Fargo and our partner organizations as we take on these important issues.”

Twenty-one NAACP units across the country will receive $4,000 grants to provide workshops on topics ranging from money management and credit to home preservation, mortgage foreclosure prevention services and mortgage lending services through partnerships with community groups in their local areas.  These NAACP local units and state conference are: Alaska, Oregon and Washington State Area Conference; Huntsville, Alabama; Gilbert, Arizona; Riverside, California; Colorado Springs, Colorado; Wilmington, Delaware; Rockledge, FL; Illinois State Conference; Fort Wayne, IN; Louisville Youth Council; Jackson Parish Branch (Jonesboro, LA); Maryland State Conference; Biloxi, MS; Scotland County NAACP Youth Council (Laurinburg, NC); Montclair, NJ; Rio Rancho, NM; Roosevelt, NY; Columbus, Ohio; Brownsville, TN; Texas State Conference and Washington, DC.

“The Financial Freedom Satellite program provides people from around the country easier access to the tools and information they need to create a strong financial future for themselves,” stated Dedrick Muhammad, Senior Director for Economic Programs for the NAACP.

Other partners of the NAACP Economic Program include the National Foundation on Credit Counseling; Financial Planning Association®; National Council on Aging; Bank of America; NeighborWorks America; Center for Responsible Lending; Operation Hope; Annie E. Casey Foundation; Capital Area Asset Builders; Common Security Club; Federal Trade Commission; National Community Reinvestment Coalition; U.S. Labor Department; United for a Fair Economy; Center for American Progress; Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights; National Urban League; and National Council of La Raza.

The national NAACP Financial Freedom Center launched on April 4, 2011, in Washington, DC, in partnership with Wells Fargo, as an initiative to influence change in the banking industry, prevent unfair mortgage lending practices, protect the community against predatory mortgage lending practices, improve fair credit access, and promote sustainable homeownership, financial education and wealth building strategies in historically disadvantaged communities.
