New Hampshire Governor Hassan Takes Historic Step to Protect Transgender Granite Staters

Today, HRC hailed New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan for taking a bold step to extend vitally important non-discrimination protections to transgender people in New Hampshire with respect to government employment, contracts and programs. In a historic move, the administration announced it will be issuing regulations clarifying that gender identity is included in state anti-discrimination provisions.

“This critically important step by Governor Hassan is critically important to protect thousands of transgender Granite Staters,” said HRC Senior Vice President of Policy and Political Affairs JoDee Winterhof. “We congratulate the Governor on her leadership and vision and her willingness to fight for a world where everyone including LGBTQ people, can live free from fear of discrimination.”

New Hampshire is among the majority of states that lack fully inclusive gender identity non-discrimination laws. HRC’s survey of LGBTQ people last year found that nearly two-thirds have experienced discrimination.
