The Humane Society of the United States has released a video on the origins of the "swine flu" H1N1 pandemic. Dr. Michael Greger, a physician and expert on public health and animal agriculture, narrated the video, which is titled "Flu Factories: Tracing the Origins of the Swine Flu Pandemic." The one-hour presentation explores the role factory farming has played in the emergence of the current pandemic as well as the 10 factors that make industrialized animal agriculture such a breeding ground for animal-to-human diseases.
"The swine-origin H1N1 virus is a poignant example of how our treatment of animals can have global public health implications," said Greger.
Michael Greger, M.D., serves as director of public health and animal agriculture at The HSUS. An internationally recognized lecturer, he has presented at the Conference on World Affairs, the National Institutes of Health and the International Bird Flu Summit. He has also testified before Congress. His recent scientific publications in American Journal of Preventive Medicine, Biosecurity and Bioterrorism, Critical Reviews in Microbiology and the International Journal of Food Safety, Nutrition and Public Health explore the public health implications of industrialized animal agriculture.
Greger is the author of Bird Flu: A Virus of Our Own Hatching (2006) and a graduate of the Cornell University School of Agriculture and the Tufts University School of Medicine.
The video will be distributed to selected policymakers, academics and non-governmental organizations.
