Sierra Club Applauds Salt Lake City for its 100 Percent Clean Energy Commitment

On Tuesday, Mayor Jackie Biskupski and the Salt Lake City City Council passed Climate Positive SLC, a joint resolution committing the city to get 100 percent of its electricity from clean energy sources and drastically reducing its its greenhouse gas emissions.

The resolution seeks an 80 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 and to achieve 100 percent clean energy by 2032 . Salt Lake City now joins 15 other U.S. cities, including Burlington, VT, Aspen CO, and San Diego, CA, that have pledged to transition to 100 percent clean energy.

In response, Jodie Van Horn, Director of Sierra Club’s #Readyfor100 campaign, released the following statement:

“We applaud Salt Lake City’s bold pledge to achieve 100 percent clean energy by 2032 and to massively reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. Setting a goal like this has the potential to create incredible opportunities and benefits for the community, including cleaner air and great jobs. We look forward to watching how this energy plan comes together to build a cleaner, stronger and more equitable city. With this decision, it is clear that Mayor Biskupski and the Salt Lake City Council members are committed to Salt Lake City’s energy future and how it can play a role in  the global effort to protect the health of our communities and our planet by transitioning to a clean energy economy.

“Salt Lake City now joins fifteen other U.S. cities, including Burlington, VT, Aspen, CO, and San Diego, CA, in leading the transition to 100 percent clean energy. Cities are no longer thinking incrementally about their goals to protect the climate and improve the quality of life for their communities; cities know which way the wind is blowing.”
