Sierra Club Celebrates Catherine Cortez Masto’s Senate Victory #VoteResults

Catherine Cortez Masto defeated GOP Congressman Joe Heck in a victory for Nevada’s solar jobs and climate action.
Throughout the election, Sierra Club vigorously engaged its membership and voters throughout Nevada to get out the vote in support of Cortez Masto, including running both independent expenditure program and coordinated campaigns. The independent program educated and mobilized members and supporters through the mail, on TV, the radio and as part of a national #ClimateVoter web guide highlighting some of the most important Senate races around the country from citizens concerned about the need for strong climate action.

The coordinated program worked with the Cortez Masto campaign to recruit volunteers and bolster the campaign’s field efforts.

In response to tonight’s victory Michael Brune, Executive Director of the Sierra Club, issued the following statement:

“The Sierra Club gives our profound congratulations tonight to Senator-elect Cortez Masto. Cortez Masto has been a champion for Nevada’s solar jobs and climate action during this campaign, and we could not be happier that she is now able to bring that leadership to the Senate.

“The work of hundreds of volunteers, who put in countless hours of hard work reaching out to friends, communities, and voters across the state, contributed to tonight’s victory. The Sierra Club dedicated time and energy to this race because we knew it was clear that the voters of Nevada want a solar jobs and climate champion in office, rather than someone who sides with big oil at every opportunity while denying the science of climate change.

“The Sierra Club was thrilled to campaign with Catherine Cortez Masto, and we can’t wait to working with her in the years to come to advance climate and clean energy progress in Washington.”
