Sierra Club: Fossil-Fuel Friend Elaine Chao Wrong for Transportation Secretary #ToxicChoice

President-elect Donald Trump announced Elaine Chao as his Transportation Secretary. Chao is the former Labor Secretary under President George W. Bush, former deputy secretary of transportation under President George H.W. Bush, and spouse to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement:

“Our nation can’t afford to have someone who has proven to be an enemy of working families and a friend of the fossil fuel industry in the driver’s seat at the Department of Transportation, but that’s exactly what we get with Donald Trump’s pick of Elaine Chao. History shows Chao would rather help corporate polluters than act to protect good-paying jobs or our climate.

“Transportation is now the largest source of U.S. carbon emissions, so we need a leader who will protect Americans from toxic pollution. Now more than ever, our nation should be investing in clean, money-saving, and jobs-creating transportation technology like electric vehicles, not cozying up to the fossil fuel industry to attack fuel efficiency standards. Chao’s appointment is the latest in a string of reckless, backward appointments by President-elect Donald Trump, and we call on any Senator who wants to stand up for her or his constituents to oppose this appointment.”
