On October 21st, Representative Denny Heck (WA-10) announced his opposition to the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), the controversial trade deal between the U.S. and 11 other Pacific Rim nations. The TPP is also opposed by the Sierra Club, over 1,500 civil society organizations including hundreds of environmental organizations, both major party Presidential candidates, and millions of Americans.
In his statement on the TPP, Rep. Heck asked important questions related to the enforcement of trade deals and the impacts of the TPP on workers and jobs. At the end of his assessment, Rep. Heck concluded that until his concerns are addressed, he will not vote for the TPP in the lame duck session or later. Furthermore, he noted that, “it is time to hit both the pause and the reset buttons on trade agreements and to truly rethink how we approach this.”
In response, Margie Van Cleve, Sierra Club Washington State Chapter Chair released the following statement:
“The Sierra Club’s Washington State Chapter applauds Representative Heck for standing up for Washingtonians by rejecting the TPP, a dangerous deal for our clean air, clean water, and climate protections. We couldn’t agree more that now is the time to truly rethink how we approach trade. We don’t need another trade deal that allows polluters to threaten our efforts against offshore drilling in the Arctic, oil trains in our communities, and refineries on our rivers and coasts. We need fair trade that protects communities and helps us act on climate. Other members of Congress should follow the path that Representative Heck has paved by joining the ever-growing opposition to this deal.”
