Story District Stories in the heart of Steel City #LGBTQ

Post submitted by HRC Alabama State Manager, Eva Kendrick and HRC Alabama Field Organizer, Tori Wolfe-Sisson

In partnership with Human Rights Campaign and with funding from The National Endowment for the Arts, Story District is coming Birmingham to produce its signature Pride show — Out/Spoken: Queer, Questioning, Bold & Proud in Birmingham (Nov 12). We are thrilled to be able to share the Alabama stories of life in and around LGBTQ community.

This 90-minute show will feature a variety of people telling eight-minute true stories related to the joys and challenges of queer life in Alabama. Three to four slots will be open to local folks who are interested in being a part of the show. No experience necessary. Each storyteller will work extensively with a coach to craft the most compelling and entertaining performance-ready story.

Beyond the event in November, the HRC Alabama team can attest to the importance and the power of delivering stories well. We have conversations with folks of all walks of life, some who are progressive and pro-equality and others who are not. When it gets down to it, telling your story well is the easiest way to share your shoes for a mile of your life’s journey. From the state house to the kitchen table, the grocer to the dermatologist- the questions people have are based on conversations they have never had and our stories are the ways hearts and minds are changed.

If this sounds fun or you know you have a compelling story to share, please fill out this form.
