Survivor Sells Out

Many television viewers were dismayed last week when

they witnessed the slaughter of an apparently feral pig by one of the

contestants on CBS’ “Survivor” t.v. show. Animal protection groups in the

U.S. have decried the action as a clear violation of both the Humane

Slaughter Act and state animal cruelty laws. Now, animal protection

groups in Queensland, Australia (where the episode was filmed) are

stepping into the fray, asking the Queensland government to investigate.

A spokesman for the government’s Department of Primary Industries has said

that the department’s own animal welfare unit and the Royal Society for

the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) will look into the killing to

determine whether it breached the state’s Animal Protection Act.
