Tennessee Adopts New K-12 Science Standards that Include Climate Change Education #ClimateChange #Education

The Tennessee State Board of Education adopted new K-12 science standards that include climate change education at its meeting in Nashville. The standards are modeled after Next Generation Science Standards.

“We applaud the State Board of Education, parents, students, teachers, science standards review committee, and everyone in Tennessee who have succeeded in bringing a high quality science education that includes climate science to all Tennessee students,” said John Friedrich with Climate Parents, a national initiative that engages parents, grandparents, and families to support climate change education. “Tennessee students will now be taught the evidence about human-caused climate change, and therefore be prepared to help develop solutions,” said Friedrich.

The newly adopted Tennessee science standards include the following climate and clean energy standards:

  • Engage in argument from evidence regarding the impacts of human activity on climate change. Design solutions to address these impacts.
  • Analyze geoscience data and the results from global climate models to make an evidence-based forecast of the current rate of global or regional climate change and associated future impacts to Earth systems.
  • Use a topographic map and a geologic map to determine an ideal location for a Tennessee electricity generating facility to provide solar, wind, nuclear, hydroelectric, or other renewable/power.

Following adoption of the standards, Science Instructional Manager for Shelby County schools, and mom, Latoya Pugh, tweeted: “We will be doing big things for science. Can’t wait!”

With tthis vote, Tennessee joins 21 other states and the District of Columbia in adopting new science standards over the past three years that include climate change education.
