The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) National Shelter Outreach Program has provided a total of $15,000 in financial grants through the ASPCA Disaster Relief Fund to aid animal shelters in Florida affected by Hurricane Charley. The grants have been awarded to Suncoast Humane Society in Englewood, the Animal Welfare League of Charlotte in Port Charlotte, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay in Tampa, the Humane Society of Polk County in Winter Haven and the Desoto County Board of County Commissioners in Arcadia. The ASPCA is now issuing a call to action for continued support to these shelters in need. Some supplies needed at the shelters include: dry and canned food, towels, blankets and computer equipment. Other shelters are in dire need of financial support.
ASPCA Director of New York State Disaster Relief, Kelly Harrington traveled to Polk County, Florida to assist in the rescue efforts. Harrington worked with Maryland-based Days End Horse Rescue, Colorado-based Code 3 Associates, and California-based United Animal Nations to rescue horses and other large farm animals in Polk County. A temporary sheltering facility and mobile command center has been established for intake of rescued animals. The temporary facilities are located on Spressard Holland Parkway off of Highway 17 in Bartow, behind the John W. Hunt Building off Clower Street.
