The Humane Society of the United States was called in by the Blount County Sheriff's Department to lead the rescue of more than 100 dogs from a Hayden, Ala. property. These dogs were being housed in outdoor pens and lacked proper socialization and medical care. All of the dogs have been surrendered to the custody of the Blount County Sheriff's Department.
"It is a relief to know that these dogs are starting out the new year on the road to becoming cherished family members," said Scotlund Haisley, senior director of Emergency Services for The HSUS. "As the temperatures dip into the teens, we are extremely happy that these dogs will finally be warm and safe tonight."
When rescuers arrived on the scene they found the animals living in cramped, dirty conditions without adequate shelter from the elements. The property owner was attempting to adopt the dogs out, but became overwhelmed and lacked the resources to properly care for the animals. The dogs are mostly mid-to-large mixed breeds.
The HSUS is safely removing the animals and transporting them in our heated, 75-foot animal sheltering vehicle. Rescuers are then housing the dogs at an emergency shelter set up in an unpopulated area of the Greater Birmingham Humane Society. The HSUS is partnering with the GBHS for this rescue. The GBHS is providing sheltering volunteers and a facility for the emergency shelter. Much-needed sheltering supplies and food were donated by PetSmart Charities®
The dogs will be examined by veterinarians and receive any necessary immediate medical care. They will soon be placed with humane organizations in the region and evaluated for adoption.
