The HSUS Commends Dr. Gary Michelson's $75 Million Pet Sterilization Incentive

Dr. Gary Michelson's effort to end the pet overpopulation crisis could revolutionize the field of animal care and prevent the suffering of millions of dogs and cats around the world. Dr. Michelson has offered a $25 million prize to the person or group who can develop a safe, one-time non-surgical means to sterilize male and female cats and dogs. Recognizing that new ideas for pet sterilization may need some development and evaluation, Dr. Michelson will also be making up to $50 million available to support research into such new approaches.

"Pet overpopulation is a widespread epidemic in the United States and around the world, and The Humane Society of the United States applauds Dr. Michelson for his bold challenge to come up with a way to solve this crisis," said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS. "The development of a non-surgical spay and neuter procedure will be especially helpful for developing nations where personnel and equipment needed to perform standard spay and neuter procedures are hard to come by."

Even after three decades of steady progress in bringing the number of unwanted animals down, approximately four million animals are euthanized every year in the United States. Many of these animals are healthy and well socialized, but there are simply too few homes for all of the animals born every year.

A non-surgical sterilization procedure would be convenient and cost-effective, thus decreasing the number of unwanted litters.

The HSUS has worked to combat pet overpopulation through our longstanding public outreach and direct service work. The HSUS spays or neuters thousands of animals through its Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association, supports progressive legislation and policies to encourage spaying and neutering and helps animal organizations implement successful programs in their communities.
