Thousands Rally In Sanford To Demand Justice For Trayvon Martin

Today, the NAACP and thousands of supporters and activists from around the country marched and rallied in Sanford, Florida to demand justice for Trayvon Martin.

“Today we mourn for the life of Trayvon, we grieve for his family, and we confront our own fears,” stated Roslyn Brock, Chairman of the NAACP Board of Directors.  But we also have to turn this into action, to support Trayvon’s family in their time of need and use the terrible circumstances of his death to create change.”

“The NAACP and community activists from around the country stand here today united with one goal – securing the arrest of George Zimmerman,” stated National NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous. “That has been the number one priority for those invested in this case.  Our community deserves answers and Trayvon’s family deserves justice.”

Last month, Trayvon Martin was visiting his father in Sanford when he was shot to death by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman. The unarmed teen was returning from a local 7-Eleven carrying nothing but Skittles and an iced tea at the time of the shooting. Despite 911 calls confirming that he pursued Trayvon, Zimmerman has yet to be arrested in connection with Trayvon’s death.

“The NAACP has been actively involved in this case since February, and we will commit to it until justice is served,” stated NAACP Florida State Conference President Adora Obi Nweze. “This rally is a chance for people to express their collective outrage about this case and channel their anger into answers.”

“We marched today to ensure that justice avails in the tragedy Trayvon Martin,” stated NAACP Seminole County President Turner Clayton. “This case was mishandled from the start, and all evidence shows that George Zimmerman should to be arrested. Today, the NAACP sent that message loud and clear.”
