After 19 years, death row inmate Troy Davis finally had the opportunity to air his defense in a court of law on Wednesday, June 23rd. The hearing was the culmination of a campaign by the NAACP, Amnesty International and others who brought up evidence that Davis did not receive a fair trial in 1991.
In a vigil in front of the Savannah Courthouse, NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous told the crowd, “We are here today seeking justice hoping that once again the court will affirm our faith that justice can and will be done here in this country.”
In the first day of Davis’ evidentiary hearing, four witnesses who had testified against him in 1991 recanted their testimony under oath.
Troy Davis had been on death row since his 1991 conviction, until last August when the Supreme Court of the united states found that a Georgia District Court must reconsider the facts of the case and to make a finding as to Davis’ innocence.
