Urban League Movement Mourns the “Storied Life” of President George H.W. Bush

National Urban League President Marc H. Morial issued the following statement on the death of President George H. W. Bush:

“The Urban League Movement offers its deepest condolences to the family of President George H. W. Bush and joins the nation in mourning his storied life.

“As the president who led the nation through a transformative period, bringing the Cold War to a close, George H. W. Bush’s career represented a personal transformation as well. He confessed that he regretted the ‘hard right’ positions he took while seeking election to Congress from Texas in the tumultuous 1960s, and voted for the Fair Housing Act despite the expressed opposition from his constituents.

“His most profound legacy as President is the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act, which transformed the nation and is a model for equal-rights legislation.

“Even among those who disagreed with him politically, President Bush was admired for his strong sense of decency and civility. As a tribute to his before, the nation should do more to emulate his personal ethics.”
