Honoring Our Rescued Turkey Friends at the Northern California Celebration for the Turkeys #AnimalRescue

The Thanksgiving season provides a wonderful opportunity to consider and celebrate all the gifts that life has to offer. Here at Farm Sanctuary, it also brings one of our favorite traditions: our Celebration for the Turkeys events!

Last weekend, a group of compassionate friends joined us at our Northern California Shelter for the first of our three Celebrations this year. The day offered a special opportunity for the turkeys to be the guests of honor at a Thanksgiving celebration just for them!

Perdita’s
name means “lost” – and she was truly lost in the crowd in her former life on a factory farm. But today, she’s letting her sweet, affectionate personality shine at Farm Sanctuary, helping everyone she meets come to the conclusion that every
turkey is someone, not something! This Thanksgiving season, Perdita is one of our turkey ambassadors through our Adopt a
Turkey Project
sponsorship program. We hope you’ll consider “adopting” her or one of her turkey friends!

Sadly, Thanksgiving is anything but celebratory for the 46 million turkeys who are killed for the holiday each year.  But caring people can make a difference for these amazing birds — and one important way is by honoring them during this season when so many of them are exploited.

The Celebration is a great opportunity to do just that!

Perdita was the first of our Northern California turkey residents to dash out from the barn and out to the party where she and her turkey friends were the guests of honor!

We were thrilled to welcome
guests from far and wide to our Northern California Shelter in Orland!

Back at our Orland location this year by popular demand, the Celebration was a wonderful opportunity for our “humanimal” friends to honor what the Thanksgiving season is all about.

The only turkeys on our tables are
alive and happy! Perdita, above, and her friends enjoyed
a spread fit for a turkey, and “gobbled” up their meal as their human friends cheered them on!

On the menu were some of the turkeys’ favorite delicacies, including a colorful salad and even a special “pie” with some of their most-loved toppings! (Of course, there were delicious, plant-based foods for the human guests as well!)

During the event, Kate gave an inspiring talk about her feathered
friends, discussing how unique, friendly, and affectionate turkeys can be when given the chance to live free from pain and fear. Guests also had the opportunity to hear from Farm Sanctuary President & Co-founder Gene Baur and National Shelter Director Susie Coston.

Guests were then invited to join in the fun by helping the turkeys enjoy their holiday meal!

At Farm Sanctuary, we
have so much to be thankful for that one celebration isn’t enough – later this weekend, the turkey residents of our Southern California Shelter will have their own feast, followed by our New York Celebration for the Turkeys the following weekend! (Visit our Events page to learn about more upcoming Farm Sanctuary events, or sign up for our email list to receive notifications when tickets become available!)

Animal advocates Jamie Kilstein, Kat Von D, and Moby demonstrate how to make a turkey dinner, with turkey co-stars Venus, Serena, Madeline, and Turkey Lurkey happy to join in the fun!

Even if you won’t be joining us for one of our Celebrations this year, it’s easy to take the party home with you! Another great way to honor these special birds during the Thanksgiving season is by sponsoring one of our rescued residents through the Adopt a Turkey Project.

Kristoff, Marshall, Spunky, Sandy, Ruthie, and Perdita are this year’s Adopt a Turkey ambassadors. Sponsors receive an adoption certificate with a photo and bio of their turkey friend; many of our supporters tell us they love to display their certificates on their holiday tables!

We are so thankful for
your support as we work to help farm animals live the peaceful lives they deserve through

our rescue, education, and advocacy efforts. At Thanksgiving and all through the year, may we all consider the
difference we can make when we put compassion first!
